Bioactive constituents from Juglans regia

 

The bioactivity-guided fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Juglans regia L. with potential allelopathy led to the isolation of four flavonoid-type allelochemicals, kaempferol (1) and kaempferol-3-O-a-L- arabofuranoside (2), quercetin (3), and quercetin-3-O-b-D-galactopyranoside (hyperoside, 4). Their structures were established by means of spectroscopic (UV, IR, NMR, FAB-MS, HSQC) analysis. Compounds 1-4 had remarkable effects on the growth of lettuce seedlings and the inhibitory activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV).  The present findings are the first to show that they have such activity in the plant.
